# Laws Ontology
updated 2026-05-05 · created 2026-05-05 · 2 min read

What is actually true about how the universe works, regardless of what anyone believes or practices. The firewall on the other side of Lore: Lore records claims, Laws record truths.

These are not legal codes (those go under Concepts → Law / Code). These are the metaphysical, physical, and cosmic rules the world actually obeys. Most pages here will be partly or fully gm-only until discovered in play.

Subtypes

  • Axiom — true everywhere, always, no exceptions (“the dead do not return whole”, “names bind”).
  • Rule — true under specified conditions (“iron disrupts fae glamours”, “blood spilled on consecrated stone cannot lie”).
  • Constraint — what cannot happen, or only under cost (“no living thing crosses the Black River without paying”).
  • Threshold — a condition that flips a state (“dawn dispels lesser curses”, “a name spoken three times summons what bears it”).
  • Cosmological — structural facts about reality itself (number of planes, nature of time, what underlies what).

Common fields

type, subtype, scope (universal | regional | situational), knownness (common | scholarly | hidden | gm-only), discovered_by, world, tags.

Common relationships

governs Concept / Object / Magic Tradition, discovered by Character, exploited by Organization, contradicts Lore (where popular belief is wrong), exception to Law, referenced in Document.
